we know the importance of the election. after all, this is the presidency we're discussing here, but at this point when you see new video like what came out of new jersey in the last few minutes, we have one week to deal with the election, but right now people are hurting. >> that's right. there was a rumor yesterday that mitt romney might go to new jersey to survey some of the damage. chris christie was asked about that. he essentially brushed that off and wasn't interested. he was interested in working with the president in relief efforts and didn't want to see presidential politics in new jersey. i thought that comment was more important that mitt romney can't show up on the east coast right now. he has to stay away. >> chris, where does the situation of the campaign stand right now? not the physical portion of it. we know and i'll play sound a little later of bill clinton in minnesota, but the reality in the minds of voters before sandy we were talking 3 to 5% of the undecided population out there. many others had actua

there's eight days until the presidential election. president obama and mitt romney being forced to change plans as the storm approaches. more on that in just a moment. first, lets ae go right to bill karins for the very latest on this hurricane. bill . >>> good morning to you, willie. new update from the national hurricane center. there was zero good news spread by them. the storm has increased in intensity a little bit. now we're looking at possibly 80 to 90 mile per hour landfall. maybe the storm surge could be a little bit worse. this is not what anyone wanted to hear. the winds are now the up to 85 miles per hour. that's a healthy hurricane. for this time of year it's ridiculous. you don't get these this far north this time of year. it's moving to the north at 15. now only about 350 to 400 miles away from new york city. here's the new forecast path. they shifted it just a little bit south. it was up here in central jersey and now they lowered it a little bit towards wildwood. that's a better forecast for a few spots including phil

can you have an election about trustworthiness and integrity? it's no longer an ideological argument. >> i think it's an experiment. i don't think we know the answer. we will on election day, but because what mitt romney is attempting to pull off is something i don't think we have really seen before in modern politics. this is a move to the middle on the cheap. it's coming late in the campaign. it's rhetorical in nature. for comparison, think back to 2000. the republicans made a calllation after eight years of clinton that they were too far in the right, and needed to be in the middle and needed a compassionate conservatism. but bush spent 1999 developing a real program. later call ed it big government skeftism. he had a real plan for a greater federal role in education. he had a real plan there on prescription drugs. they developed a vision. so there was real substance there. mitt romney was far to the right in the primary. gave the conservative base everything they wanted. this is one of the most conservative republican platforms we have seen.
